It is special in so many ways…
As September is the start of autumn, it also defines a new start in so many aspects of our lives.
Some people may feel depressed as the winter comes, others feel pleased ’cause fall is their favourite season.. for everyone September is an important month…or crusial depending on the facts in their lives. As well as for Zagora’s inhabitats, September is one of the most productive period of the year.
Why is that?
Due to the massive production of the famous, both in domestic market and abroad, marked with PDO Greek ‘Zagorin’ apples, named Starking Red Delicious! September is apple’s harvest period in the area.
Zagorin is an agricultural cooperation of local farmers. Last year was the 100th anniversary of Zagorin’s foundation. There were celebrations and honours from governmental personalities, pointing the importance of this agricultural cooperation to national economy.
The mainly Zagora’s incomes are from apple production. There is a big variety of apples and its products, which are capable to raise lots of farmers’ families at Zagora.
Also, the organic culture is growing up rapidly! Some of Zagora’s farmers complied with the European union’s regulations and now are certified bio farmers, who can influence their local community.
At the same time, when the Zagorin cooperation was expanding, women of Zagora understood the need to found the Women’s agricultural cooperation of Zagora,in 1993.
As housewives and farmers themselves, women of Zagora know how to use apples in so many ways and mix them with local herbs of Pelion mountain. One of them is the sweet and tasteful tea spoon dessert. They know the secret recipe of how to make a delicious apple pie, which at last they feel free to share with you.
